priests were dead. At times David would head to Ramah where Samuel and the sons of the prophets were headquartered. There he would be fed, encouraged, and hang out with men of like precious faith. Now this blessing was removed by the death of Samuel. In losing the priests David lost his confirmation , in losing Samuel he lost his comfort, and in losing the secrecy of his hiding place he now lost his security. David was at wits’ end. Therefore he made a very strange decision. He left the land of Judah, his home tribe, and traveled south to the land of his enemies, the Philistines. He reasoned: And David said in his heart, “Now I shall perish someday by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape to the land of the Philistines; and Saul will despair of me, to seek me anymore in any part of Israel. So I shall escape out of his hand.” —1 SAMUEL 27:1 Why would David head toward the very people he had been fighting since a teenager? The answer is that David knew Saul was afraid of the Philistines and would not attack them in their own territory. When David went to fight the Philistine giant Goliath, the battle had been stuck for forty days, and Saul wasn’t leading the charge to attack (1 Sam. 17). This is because the Spirit of the Lord was departing from him, and he had no confidence in his own natural ability. There is another side to the story, however.
