The ancient process of restoring a cracked vessel is one of the most remarkable pictures of how the Lord restored the broken vessels in the house of the potter. A CRACK IN THE VESSEL The more valuable vessels were created with molds using silver or gold. It requires intensive heat to melt the silver and gold found in the earth, to purify the metals from the dross, or natural impurities mixed with the ore or gold taken from the earth. Pure silver melts at 1,761 degrees Fahrenheit; to melt gold (24 karat) requires a heat of about 1,945 degrees Fahrenheit. 1 Proverbs speaks of removing the dross: Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer. —PROVERBS 25:4, KJV Scripture speaks of certain trials of our faith being fiery trials that are as precious as gold being purged in the fire (1 Pet. 1:7). Peter was writing to believers who were in heaviness through manifold temptations (v. 6).
