Cornelius feared God, prayed always, and gave alms (charity) to the poor. When God’s angel appeared to him, he revealed, “Cornelius, your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God” (v. 4). The Greek word for “memorial” is mnemosunon , which means a reminder or a record. God keeps remarkable records in heaven, including names in the Lamb’s Book of Life (Phil. 4:3; Rev. 3:5). Records of the words, deeds, and actions of all men are also recorded in heavenly scrolls (Rev. 20:12–13). According to Christ, even the smallest deed that is done in His name, including feeding, clothing, and visiting the poor and the prisoner, will not go unrewarded by Him (Matt. 10:41– 42). God records the acts and actions of our activities on earth that are done in His name and marks them in His heavenly books for later reference on the Day of Judgment. However, not all rewards are being reserved for handing out from the judgment seat of Christ in heaven (Rev. 11:18). There are certainly various rewards and blessings that are released from God to the earth upon churches and individuals, resulting from a building up and overflow of their heavenly accounts. The church or any individual who continually prays, fasts, witnesses, assists the poor and needy, and performs acts of charity and kindness is recorded in heaven. As we meet the needs of others, God in return meets our needs, releasing blessing for acts of charity and obedience. My wife and I know of a young woman who, as a young teenager, traveled with her parents, whose job it was to help set up food assistance for the poor during disaster relief efforts.
