tortures Christians. The pastor was placed in a nasty prison cell and was told he would not be fed for ninety days. The soldiers told him that at the end of ninety days they would return to get his rotting carcass out of the prison. The cell was cold, with a dirt floor, and had small holes in the bottom where air filtered in through the night. Instead of crying and complaining, the minister began thanking God for allowing him to be persecuted for the gospel’s sake! He knew he would eventually starve to death in this forsaken place, but he refused to compromise his faith. He began to praise God, and as he worshipped, he began to think of the story in the Bible where the birds fed the prophet. He looked around and realized there were no windows. He hung his head and became slightly discouraged, and when he did, something caught his attention—a rat had come into his cell and had brought him a fresh apple. He rejoiced, but the miracle didn’t end there. The next day the rat brought him a banana. It seemed that the rat was sneaking off with the food of the numerous guards, and he continued to feed him during the ninety days! The water content in the fruit provided enough for his survival. At the end of ninety days the guards returned expecting to find a stinking corpse, only to find a man who looked healthier than when they put him in the cell—and he was still living! Great fear came upon them as he told them God kept him alive, and they willingly released him from the prison!
