army a special seal called the Magen David , or the Shield of David, which we know today as the Star of David—the same six-pointed star emblem found on Israeli flags today. 1 According to Jewish legend this was done by David as a form of protection in the time of battle. In that day most tribes and armies in nations had certain emblems and objects that were considered sacred to their god or religion and that were used in time of battle—certain amulets and emblems that were considered signs of “luck” in crisis or conflict. I have seen people carrying around a rabbit’s foot for “good luck.” The problem is, luck didn’t help the rabbit; he lost his foot in the process, so how could the remains of a dead rabbit help a living person? Unlike the tradition of the shields of Solomon, the believer’s shield of favor needs no specific marking or emblem to enhance its strength to protect us, for favor is like a powerful fragrance —you can’t see it on the skin, but you can smell it when the person walks into the room. It is like the sun behind the clouds; you can’t see the sun itself, but you know that behind the clouds is the warmth of sunlight you are feeling in the air. Favor is what triggers others to come into agreement with your position and opinion. Favor is not the door, but it is the hinge on which the door swings open allowing you in the room. Favor marks your place at the table before you ever enter the room. Favor will carry you to places you’ve never been, seeing things you’ve never seen and meeting people you have never met who will like you and cannot explain why!
