A person can cry out with his or her voice and never shed a tear. However, when we cry with our voice and weep with our tears, the Lord moves toward those who have a “broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit” (Ps. 34:18). Tears are a physical manifestation of joy, sadness, or brokenness. There is something special about human tears. The fluid that is continually secreted through the eye creates a coating that has numerous chemicals that help fight bacteria. Tears brought about by crying have a slightly different chemical makeup, containing more protein-based hormones; they also have a slightly salty taste, as the liquids in the body contain salt. 10 The tears flowing down your face eventually reach the corners of your mouth, and the salt can be tasted, reminding a person of the bitterness of their sorrow. But tears also remind us that salt can be used to kill infections in cuts and small wounds. The salty tears are a reminder that weeping endures for a night, but joy comes in the morning (Ps. 30:5). David prayed, “Hear my prayer, O L ORD , and give ear to my cry; do not be silent at my tears” (Ps. 39:12). When King Hezekiah was dying, he sought the Lord for healing, and the Lord instructed Isaiah: “Return and tell Hezekiah the leader of My people, ‘Thus says the L ORD , the God of David your father: “I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; surely I will heal you. On the third day you shall go up to the house of the Lord”’” (2 Kings 20:5). God Himself has a record of your tears, as it is written: “You number
