3, meaning to vindicate and punish. However, when Christ gave His answer, He said, “And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? I tell you that he will avenge them speedily” (vv. 7– 8, KJV ). Here the word avenge is used twice; however, the Greek is a different word carrying a different meaning than the word in verse 3. The Greek word for “avenge” in verses 7 and 8 is poieo , and it has a wide variety of applications, including “to make or to do.” 6 This woman wanted retaliation for injustice, but Christ is saying God will make justice happen, or He will move on your behalf when you cry out to Him! God will not destroy your adversary but will help you to overcome your adversary. Paul said it this way: “Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord” (Rom. 12:19– 20). The parable indicates that a person crying out can gain the attention of the judge. Just what does it mean to “cry” out to the Lord? “Crying” and “crying out” are found in various forms about 199 times in the Bible with 29 references referring to, “crying unto the Lord” (Exod. 14:10; 15:25; 17:4, and others). There are numerous examples of crying out unto the Lord; however, there are three primary examples listed below. The first is to cry out to the Lord because of danger, grief, and anguish. When Peter began sinking under the rolling waves of the sea, he cried out to the Lord in a three-word emergency petition saying, “Lord, save me!” (Matt. 14:30).
