and a bitter person will eventually become rebellious. Every bad root will eventually produce the branches to grow bad fruit. Once bitterness breeds rebellion, then rebellion is the door for a feeling of hopelessness, and hopelessness can lead to a desire to give up and quit. People seldom quit when they feel good about themselves or their families, love their jobs, have money in the bank, and can relaxand drink hot tea at their new house on the lake. However, when crisis strikes and the marriage is in ruins, or the pink slip has been given at work and they are down to their last dollar, mental depression and a spirit of no hope can attack them. What is the one theme that runs throughout the Bible in the lives of people who were in trouble and had to “tie a knot at the end of the rope and hold on”? It is revealed in the parable of the woman and the judge in Luke 18, which reveals that the woman persistently and consistently cried out to the judge. AVENGED OF YOUR ADVERSARY Who is your adversity in life? The woman in Luke 18 cried out for the judge to “avenge me of mine adversary” (v. 3, KJV ). The Greek word for “avenge” here means, “to vindicate, retaliate or punish.” 5 The woman was asking the judge to vindicate her and punish her adversary. Later, the judge stated he will “avenge her” (v. 5). This is the same Greek word used in verse
