The churches I have reached have been small, though located in several large cities. I haven’t gotten along too well with the other religious leaders in many towns. In fact, some of them have threatened me, taken me to court, and even attacked me physically because of my preaching. I am not too good at keeping records and have even been known to forget whom I baptized. However, if you can use me, I shall do my best for you, even if I have to work to help with my support. The elder read this letter to the committee and asked them if they were interested in the applicant. Each replied that he would never work in their church. They were not interested in an unhealthy, middle-aged, trouble-making, absentminded ex jailbird. In fact, they felt insulted that such a person would send an application for the pastorate to their respected, uptown church, which was known for powerful New Testament preaching. The committee finally asked the name of the applicant. “The apostle Paul,” the elder answered, as the committee members sat silently, with many lowering their head in embarrassment . Each believer should be appreciative that God does not consult the past to determine the future. All ministers of the gospel must balance a life between two worlds—the natural and the spiritual. In the morning they are a husband and father. At noon they are a counselor heading up the staff meeting, and by night they are a communicator of the
