It took forty-two months of continual on-the-job training, and when the crisis of the crucifixion arrived, one (Judas) killed himself, one (Peter) cursed and denied Christ, and one (Thomas) didn’t believe Christ was raised from the dead. Imagine three of the twelve original trainees for the ministry— one dead (Judas), one fled (Peter), and one turning red from the embarrassment of his unbelief (Thomas). Believers tend to look at a person’s present integrity to judge his or her future success . What if we were to dig into a person’s past and then judge that person’s future success based upon pre-Christ conversion? My grandfather related this story many years ago. A church was in need of a pastor. One of the elders was interested in knowing what kind of minister they desired. He therefore wrote a letter, writing as if he was an applicant for the position. He read this letter before the pulpit committee: Gentlemen, Understanding that your pulpit is vacant, I would like to apply for the position. I have many qualifications that I think you would appreciate. I have been blessed to preach with power and have had some success as a writer. Some say I am a good organizer. I have been a lender in most places I have gone. Some folks, however, have some things against me, as I am over fifty years old. I have never preached in one place for more than three years at a time. In some places I have left town after my work caused riots and disturbances. I have to admit that I have been in jail three or four times,
