and honored to view Christ at the peak of His power, His ministry, and His glory. These three could have the “bragging rights” of being allowed in a place where others were not. This would compare today to close ministry partners who have been with the pastor or evangelist from the earliest days when the crowds were low, the offerings scarce, and nothing but prayer and faith to undergird the ministry. After years of growth they are now invited to sit on the front row in special VIP seating in a new facility where thousands are attending and to talk about how they have been with you when there was nothing but a Bible and faith in God. Switch the scene from the Mount of Transfiguration to a small eastern valley called the Garden of Gethsemane, located at the edge of the Kidron Valley in Jerusalem. Christ instructed eight of His personal disciples to remain near the edge of the garden, but He invited Peter, James, and John to go a little farther , deeper into the garden (Matt. 26:36–39). These three inner-circle disciples were allowed to witness Christ as He endured the agony of His coming death, as His sweat became like great drops of blood (Luke 22:44). Where were Moses and Elijah now? Where is that white glory cloud that engulfed Christ and the voice from heaven bragging on him, calling Him “Son” (Matt. 17:1–6)? Christ has gone from the days of grace and glory on a mountain to the hour of testing in the valley of gore and sweat mixed with blood. Soon, all but one disciple, John, would forsake Him.
