Each year in America there are two million cases of self injury reported. 4 The root causes of self-abuse are eating disorders, depression, all forms of anxiety, drug and alcohol (substance) abuse, and relationship disorders. Among teens the most common cause of self-abuse is a broken relationship —either parents divorcing or a separation of a boy or girlfriend. DESTROYING THE IMAGE OF GOD Have you ever pondered what all the numerous personal battles are really about, especially all forms of substance abuse leading to addictions? It is not just the lone stranger in the back alley whose life is being strangled to death by an addiction demon; the kids who were raised in children’s church and warmed pews on Sunday mornings are also targets of these spirits of bondage. I believe a root motivation for the kingdom of darkness to attack the weakest and the strongest among us is his desire to smear and distort the image of God in us. Our economic status, clothing quality, home size, or car costs do not impress Satan. What he sees in each person is more than the physical, outward human being. Consider a physical man. Years ago I preached a message relating that each human has a specific amount of minerals in his or her body.
