Dreams are a way that God can speak without the mind blocking and hindering the communication. Through a dream, the Holy Spirit can bypass the intellect and carnal reasoning that often obstructs the message. Dreams come during sleep when the mind is not preoccupied with the cares of this life. God can instruct us in the night season. Visions are another way the Lord communicates to his prophets. Visions occur while we are awake. A vision is a picture. Visions are the language of pictures. God speaks through pictures. There is a saying, "a picture is worth a thousand words". One picture can communicate the thoughts of God. Paula Price states, "Visions and dreams are the customary way the Lord awakens the spirit of prophets to let them know they are ordained to fill the office. According to Numbers 12:6, these are essential prophet faculties without which the prophet ceases to be a prophet. Otherwise the lack of visions and dreams by a prophet is exhibitive of the Lord's punishment for disobedience, rebellion, and misuse of the office's crucial gifts."
