CARRYING WHAT YOU DO NOT NEED TO CARRY “He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows, yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.” Isaiah 53:3-4 If you were locked in prison for life and suddenly learned that a close friend had offered to take your place, would you choose to stay behind bars? If you were dying in an intensive care unit, and you learned that another person willingly could carry your affliction so you could return to your family and live a healthy life, would you allow the transfer of the disease? Under the Old Covenant, God permitted a spiritual transfer of sin during a yearly service called Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement. Once every year, on the tenth day of the seventh month, the high priest stood before God on Yom Kippur.
