4.1 PROJECT MEGIDDO
Many of the governments around the world reacted differen tly to the growing 2012 hysteria before December 2012 with most outwardly dismissing the 2012 issue as simply hysteria, pointing back to the Y2K . However what many are not aware of is that in 1999 the FBI published a report regarding their growing interest in the apocalyptic phenomena leading up to 2000. The document published was called “Project Megiddo” and was named appropriately in relation to the plains of Megiddo in Israel, Megiddo is a hill in Israel near the modern settlement of Megiddo, known for theological, historical and geographical reasons. In ancient times Megiddo was an important city state. It is also known alternatively as Tel Megiddo (Hebrew) and Tell al -Mutesellim (Arabic). Megiddo is a tel (hill) made of 26 layers of the ruins of ancient cities in a strategic location at the head of a pass through the Carmel Ridge, which overlooks the Valley of Jezreel from the south. It is an area which the Biblical prophecies indicate will be the pivotal location during Armageddon, a war which accordin g to the Bible will draw the armies of the world into the Middle East for a military conflict that will threaten the destruction of Israel. Project Megiddo was published on October 20 th 1999 and was a protocol aimed at providing a procedure of how the US government was to handle the possible threat to US security from the increase of hysteria around the transitioning to a new century. The report was intended to alert U.S. law enforcement to what they described as the time as
"the potential for extremist criminal activity in the United States
by individuals or domestic groups who attach special
significance to the year 2000." 92
An accompanying FBI statement mentioned that
"The threat posed by extremists as a result of perceived
events associated with the Year 2000 (Y2K) is very real. The
volatile mix of apocalyptic religious and (New World Order)
conspiracy theories may produce violent acts aimed a
precipitating the end of the world as prophesied in the
Bible..." 92
The concern of the FBI was that there were militant conservative religious groups who believed that by creating widespread instances massive destruction, violence, and death, that the end of the world will be precipitated to usher in either the Second Coming of Christ or some doomsday apocal yptic scenario based on the prophecies of secular seers such as Nostradamus.
Data for the report were collected over a nine -month period of intensive intelligence gathering by the domestic terrorism unit of the FBI, The report was " considered to be so sensitive and secret that it
