REVELATION CHAPTER 12

A. The beliefs in John’s d ay

1. John lived in the time of the Greek-Roman culture which believed in many gods and goddesses 2. In Greek mythology there was Ares (god of war), Poseidon (god of the sea), and Zeus (the sky) 3. The Jewish people were all familiar with the myths and legends

B. The Greek words used in the New Testament

1. Kronos (Matt. 2:7) - He was the titan of time and this word is used for linear time 2. Tartarus (2 Pet. 2:4) - This is the deepest chamber in the underworld for the fallen angels 3. Uranous (Acts 10:11) - This is the word used in the New Testament for heaven 4. Hades (Matt. 11:23) - This was the guardian of the underworld, translated as hell

Note: Common Greek words were used in the time of Christ for time, hell, and heaven

C. The Romans and Greeks were familiar with cosmic activity

1. Both the Romans and the Greeks had astronomers – such as the Persian Magi (Matt. 2:1) 2. Both the Greeks and Romans believed in twelve constellations and the planets 3. God said the sun, moon, and stars were for the “signs and the seasons” (Gen. 1:14) 4. Joseph dreamed of the sun, moon, and stars bowing before him (Gen. 37:9)

D. The symbolism in Revelation

1. God used cosmic symbols that people understood in that day 2. God used symbols of nations as beasts, again symbols that the people understood 3. God repeated to John the apocalyptic symbolism originally revealed to Daniel

E. The symbolism of empires in Daniel

1. In Dan. 7:4 the Lion emblem is Babylon and the heavenly emblem is Leo a lion
