Note: On the Jubilee a family needed proof of possession (a will) to redeem back their land

D. Wills in the Roman time

1. The Roman wills

a. Cesar Augustus ’ will was sealed with seven seals (it must be opened by an important person). b. Some suggest the scroll was written, sealed, then written & sealed. None have ever been found. c. If Jewish families lost land or belongings, they wrote it down in a scroll sealed with seven seals. d. The will was opened when land was ready to redeem back on the Jubilee cycle.

2. The types of wills

a. Scrolls written inside called recto and written outside called verso b. Scrolls written on the front and back were called opisthograph

3. The purpose for this scroll

a. God’s will was for Adam to have dominion (Gen.1:26) b. Adam broke God’s will and Satan became the “ god of this world ” (2 Cor. 4:4) c. This book is a Jubilee will of redeeming the earth back to Christ the King d. At the seventh seal it is said, “It is finish ed .” (Rev. 10:7)

4. The seven seals on the scroll

a. There are 7 churches and 7 seals b. It required 7 witnesses to break the 7 seals, matching the seal with the insignia ring c. With 7 seals there must be 7 individual witnesses present at the opening of the scroll d. These 7 would be the pastors and the members of the seven churches

E. Who is worthy to open the seals?

1. No man was worthy

a. There is searching (Rev. 5:3) - no one was found in earth, heaven, or under the earth b. There is weeping (Rev. 5:4) - John wept as he thought the book would remain sealed c. There is declaring (Rev. 5:5) - The Lion of Judah was declared worthy to break the seals

Note: Christ is called the “Lion” of Judah (note Gen. 49:9-10) but John saw a “Lamb”

2. The celebration begins when the Lamb takes the book

a. The four living creatures bowed down to worship (Rev. 5:8) b. The twenty-four elders fell down to worship (Rev. 5:8) c. The angelic multitude - angels voices are heard in worship (Rev. 5:11) d. The ten thousand times ten thousand – thousands of thousands (Rev. 5:11-13)
