CHAPTER EIGHTEEN Attitude #9 Discipline
“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.” —2 Timothy 1:7 O ne of the key attitudes of true leadership is that of strong self-discipline. Genuine leaders under stand that self-discipline is the manifestation of the highest form of government—self-government. The true spirit of leadership cultivates a self-control that regulates one’s focus and orders one’s life. The disciplined lifestyle distinguishes leaders from followers. WHAT IS DISCIPLINE? Any study of the characteristics of true leaders will reveal that they all exhibit a strong self-discipline, usually motivated by a passion generated by a sense of purpose and vision. All leaders are “prisoners” of the passion of their purposes. Discipline may be defined as self-imposed standards and restrictions motivated by a desire that is greater than the alternatives.
