Excerpt (a) Except as provided in paragraph (b) .. . no one will be denied any right, benefit, or privilege provided by law because of refusal to disclose ... a social security number. (b) VA shall require mandatory disclosure of a claimant's or beneficiary's social security number (includingthe social security number of a dependent of a claimant or beneficiary) on necessary forms as prescribed by the Secretary as a condition precedent to receipt or continuation of receipt of compensation or pension payable under the provisions of chapters 11, 13 and 15 of title 38, United States Code, provided, however, that a claimant shall not be required to furnish VA with a social security number for any person to whom a social security number has not been assigned. ... However, no one shall be required to furnish a social security number for any person to whom none has been assigned. . .. ... A person is not required to furnish the Secretarywith a social security number for any person to whom a social security number has not been assigned. .. . (4) The Postal Service will not require individualsto furnish their social security account number or deny a right, privilege or benefit because of an individual's refusal to furnish the number unless it must be provided by Federal law. . .. ... Voting Rights Act Application .. . The disclosure of social security number and telephone number is voluntary. ~ailureto state either or both numbers will NOT result in your application being deficient. ... Note: An individual's refusal to disclose his social security number shall not constitute cause in and of itself, for denial of a request. ... (a) No individual is denied any right, benefit, or privilege provided by law because of such individual's refusal to disclose his social security account number. (b) The provisions of paragraph (a) of this section do not apply to: (1) Any disclosure which is required by Federal statute; or (2) The disclosure of a social security number when such disclosure was required under statute or regulation adopted prior to January 1, 1975, to verify the identity of an individual.
