Peter calls those who believe in the stone of stumbling a "chosen generation, a holy nation ... which in times past were not a people but are now the people of God" (I Peter 2:9-10). Israel was to provide a light to the rest of the world and teach the nations about the one true God. After the destruction of the Temple, this mission was taken from Israel and given to a nation that would temporarily act as the "chosen generation, a peculiar people, a holy nation." Remember that America, like Israel, was birthed during Passover. There are also connections within the parable of Matthew 21 and the stone of stumbling in 1 Peter 2:8.
