I believe that their view of being in covenant with God, destined by His plan, was the true motivation for the men at Lexington and Concord. The Historical Significance of Nisan 19 th The fight at Concord lasted only two or three minutes; yet, the result of the battle lasts to this day! Lexington and Concord signaled the birth pains of a new nation. As the Americans pursued the retreating British, they were, in a spiritual sense, personifying the waters of the Red Sea overcoming the armies of Pharaoh who had gone to pursue the children of Israel. In fact, it was miraculous that the entire force was not killed or taken prisoner. According to the Hebrew calendar, April 19, 1775 was Nisan 19. The Jewish commentator Rashi indicated that this is the date in Jewish history when Pharaoh set out in pursuit of Israel. So here at the North Bridge was the birth of the American exodus. Another peculiarity in Jewish history occurred on April 26, 1655. This day was also Nisan 19. On that day, the Dutch West India Company refused to grant permission to Governor Peter Stuyvesant to exclude Jews from New Amsterdam (present day New York). Therefore, Nisan 19 signifies a banner day in Jewish history, especially for American Jews. This marked the end of official efforts to bar Jews from North America and allowed Jews to prosper and multiply in the New World. To this day, more Jews live in the United States than in the nation of Israel. Is it a coincidence that, on this same day, Nisan 19, the nation destined to be the greatest nation in the world revolted against its Pharaoh? America has been a haven for Jews. It helped bring about the birth of modern Israel—a rebirth made possible only after the defeat of Adolf Hitler. America was instrumental in ensuring that defeat.
