Plucking the Eagle's Wings
Plucking the Eagle's Wings
continued to restore God's house as well. In its infancy, America based law and order upon the statues from the Bible. The Pilgrim and Puritan fathers had so influenced American society and government that 100 years later, their descendants still relied upon the only credible form of government and self-rule they had ever known. In essence, they continued to build on the foundation laid by their forefathers. The Temple in Jerusalem had long since been destroyed and Jews were scattered throughout the world; therefore, it seems that God began constructing for Himself another house in America. In 1838, an American named John O' Sullivan wrote, "The far-reaching future will be the era of American greatness ... the nation of many nations is destined to manifest to mankind the obedience of Divine principles to establish on earth the noblest temple ever dedicated to the worship of the Most High." As you will see later in this book, Mr. O'Sullivan was more precise in his editorial than even he could have imagined. Other Prophetic Utterances In September 1768, the Boston Gazette stated, "If an army should be sent to reduce us to slavery, we will put our lives in our hands and cry to the Judge of all the earth ... behold how they come to cast us out of this possession which thou hast given us to inherit. Help us, Lord, our God for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude." This provides great insight into what the residents of Boston thought about the prospect of war with Britain. Apparently, they felt that God was on their side and would fight on their behalf. Earlier in April 1768, the New York Gazette noted, "Courage, Americans. The finger of God points out a mighty empire to your sons. The savages of the wilderness were never expelled to make room for idolaters and slaves. The land we possess is the gift of heaven to our fathers, and Divine Providence seems to have decreed it to our latest posterity. .. the day dawns in which the foundation of this mighty empire is to be laid, by the establishment of a regular American Constitution ... before seven years roll over our heads, the first stone must be laid." This is an amazing statement since exactly seven years later in April 1775, the first shots of the Revolution were fired at Lexington-Concord. The Shot Heard Around the World
