The Eagle in Bible Prophecy
bloodthirsty mobs, yearned to see people fight to the death. The cursed Christians were killed and eaten by hungry animals in the coliseums. This unbridled violence continued as Roman society decayed. Regarding American entertainment, even some politicians agree that too much violence comes out of Hollywood. The violent spirit of the Greeks and Romans is alive and well in America. Multitudes love wrestling. Proponents of wrestling say, "It's only entertainment." Wrestling now encompasses banging chairs across heads, slamming opponents on tables, and beating opponents with clubs and baseball bats to produce blood for screaming crowds. One wrestler fell from the ceiling and was killed. Several days later, on national television, one of his friends drank two beers to his memory before a frenzied crowd. Violence is seasoned with sex as scantily clad women strut across the platforms, getting jeers and whistles from the predominately male audiences. Wrestling is now the highest rated form of American entertainment. When asked, "Why do they do it?" wrestling show producers reply, "We're just giving the people what they want." What will they give their fans when they scream, "Kill someone for us?" Rome progressed from sports, to violent entertainment, and finally, to killing Christians. Would anyone disagree with me that, as their self-indulgence prospered, their values and policies decayed? In Rome, Christians were despised. Christians were considered to be demonized, which justified their deaths as political gain. Christians spoke out against sin and they were targeted for mass extermination. Christians hid in the catacombs, a series of underground caverns that stretch for miles under Rome. They lived, worshiped, and buried their dead there. Yet the games went on as the empire deteriorated. Before America follows in Roman footsteps, she must listen to the warning in the Book of Obadiah, because sin and cultural decay demand God's judgment.
"Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence I will bring thee down, saith the Lord" (Obadiah 1:4).
