Plucking the Eagle's Wings

had been accused of misconduct. It is alleged that Chiniquy heard of a plot to kill Lincoln from Mr. Morse, the inventor of the Morse telegraph. Morse had been in Rome and learned of the plot there. Chiniquy went to see Lincoln and recounted his conversation with Mr. Morse. They discussed how Lincoln was similar to Moses of the Old Testament. Mr. Lincoln read to him out of the Bible about Moses in Deuteronomy 3:22-28. Then he said, "The more I read those verses, the more it seems to me that God has written them to me as well as to Moses. Had he not taken me from my poor log cabin by the hand, as He did of Moses in the reeds of the Nile, to put me at the head of the greatest and most blessed nation of ancient times? Has not God granted me a privilege that was not granted to any living man when I broke the chains of four million men and set them free? Now I see the end of the terrible conflict with the same joy as Moses." "And I pray my God to grant me to see the days of peace and untold prosperity which will follow this cruel war, as Moses asked God to see the other side of Jordan and enter the Promised Land. But, do you know what I hear in my soul as the voice of God giving me rebuke that was given Moses? A solemn voice which tells me that I will see these things only from a distance and that I will be among the dead." It should be noted that the last act of Congress signed by Abraham Lincoln was to require that the motto "In God We Trust" be inscribed on American coins. In short, no nation outside of Israel has such roots and connections to the Hebrew Scriptures and to the God of Abraham, as does America. The patterns of the land, the federal buildings, the documents of the Founding Fathers, and the patterns of the presidents give evidence to America's divine design and prophetic purpose. Because we know the truth, our responsibility to it is greater than that of other nations. If we sin against truth, we deserve the punishment meted out upon the scales of justice in heaven's Temple. As the times of the Gentiles begins to climax, it is not too late to turn the corner and bring the nation back to its spiritual foundation, at least for a season. One Old Testament Biblical command is as valid today as when it was written. Christ said, "Heaven and earth shall pass away but my words shall not pass away" (Matthew 24:35). One of the greatest promises for our nation is found in 2 Chronicles: "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble
