When exploring the background of Bill Clinton to learn how he gained prestige in politics, the average person is left wondering, "How did he get to the top?" In the early 1950s, he accepted Christ at a Billy Graham crusade. He walked alone to church carrying a Bible under his arm. Clinton recalls, at age 12 sending his tithe of ten cents to Billy Graham's evangelistic organization. He was water baptized and joined the church choir. A former pastor, Dexter Blevins, recalled, "He was in church every time the doors were opened." When learning about the difficulties in Bill's family, many Americans have asked, "How could a young man with such a difficult family background rise so high on the political ladder, unless he had some inside help?" While staying with friends in the southeastern United States, I learned some interesting information about Bill Clinton. During my stay, I learned that my friend's mother was a friend to some elderly members of Arkansas' inner circle. According to her, when Bill was young, his mother became acquainted with a well-known Washington politician. Soon, a close relationship developed with the Washington insider. His visits to Arkansas included meetings with Bill's mother, Virginia. As a special favor to her, the politician was asked to help make a politician out of her son William. It was this man who assisted young Clinton in achieving his political ambition. Clinton has been a real paradox. On the one hand, his trail of moral failures and spiritual weaknesses appears to have extended from the governor's mansion to the White House. Yet, when Lamar Vest, General Overseer of the Church of God, visited Clinton several years ago to discuss persecution of Chinese Christians, Clinton pulled a well worn, marked Bible out of his desk in the Oval Office. He stated to those present that he read the Bible and prayed for wisdom every day. After his indiscretion with a White House intern became known, he confessed that he had sinned.
