and praying." Reagan was a praying man and was visited on several occasions by Billy Graham. In the emergency room, the President realized someone was holding his hand. The hand touched his hand and then held it tight. He remembers a comforting, reassuring feeling. He asked several times who was holding his hand but received no response. He later tried to find out who held his hand, assuming it was a nurse. He was never able to locate the person. Reagan said, "Someone was looking out for us on that day." He told several agents that he gave credit to God for protecting his life. Pope John Paul II was shot on May 13, 1981, the anniversary of the alleged appearance of the Virgin Mary to three children in Fatima, Portugal. On May 13, 1917, the alleged apparition spoke messages about the future, including a series of prophecies involving Russia. According to the prediction, Russia would one day be converted if the Catholic people would dedicate Russia to the immaculate heart of Mary. The apparition predicted that one day, Russia would be converted and that the Virgin Mary would play a role in the process. After being shot on the anniversary of this 64-year-old vision, the Pope felt that it was Mary who saved his life. He pledged himself to her and to her message. Pope John Paul II has a personal motto: totus tuus sum Maria, meaning Mary I'm all yours . One year later on May 13, 1982, the Pope prayed before the statue of our Lady of Fatima and consecrated the world to her as she had requested. On May 13 th , 1984, he consecrated the world to her again based upon the promise of 1917, "if my wishes are fulfilled, my Immaculate Heart will triumph, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace!" It appears that, from that moment on, the Pope set in his heart to do all in his power to help fulfill the Fatima prophecy and "convert Russia to the message of Christianity and Mary." It was shortly thereafter that the Pope began to visit a number of Communist countries. Three Men at the Right Place at the Right Time With Reagan in America, Gorbachev in the Soviet Union, and the Pope as the spiritual leader of over 1 billion Catholics, including many in Communist countries, the stage was set to begin dismantling the Iron Curtain.
