the predestined purpose of Gorbachev was twofold: to bring religious freedom to the Soviet Union (Russia), and to release the Soviet Jews by allowing them to immigrate back to Israel. This action was also in direct fulfillment of ancient Biblical prophecies. The Jewish Return From the North Country During a tour to Israel in the late 1980s, my group was shopping in Bethlehem. Suddenly we got a report that a plane had been hijacked from Russia to Israel. My tour guide Gideon, my camera man Dwayne Kilpatrick, and I immediately raced to the Ben Guerin airport in Tel Aviv. We were forbidden to tape certain areas because we didn't have a pass. Then Gideon took us to a special side entrance where the hostages were being released. We later heard a rumor that several Soviet Jews were aboard the hijacked plane. There was speculation that they hijacked the plane in order to get to Israel, although the report was denied (perhaps for political purposes). That night as I stood watching vehicles on the airport runway, I heard an inward voice say, "The north will let my people go!" I returned and told several friends that the Soviet Union will be releasing Jews shortly. They looked at me in disbelief, but Scripture had already decreed the event: "Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that it shall no more be said, the Lord liveth, that brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt; But the Lord liveth, that brought up the children of Israel from the land of the north, and from all the lands whither he had driven them: and I will bring them again into their land that I gave unto their fathers." (Jeremiah 16:14-16) In ancient times, Israel was in Babylonian captivity for exactly 70 years (Jeremiah 25:11). God gave Israel Ten Commandments and He warned them that, if they disobeyed Him, the punishment would be seven times (Leviticus 26:18). Ten multiplied by seven equals seventy. In 1917, Communism imprisoned Russia for seventy years. In 1987, seventy years after the revolution, the breakdown of the Iron Curtain began. As Reagan spoke about tearing down the Berlin Wall in Germany, Mr. Gorbachev helped to unfasten the mighty iron curtain over Russia and Eastern Europe.
