specific emblem that became its seal of national identity. Judah's emblem was a lion, Reuben's was a man, Dan's was an eagle, and Manesseh's was an ox or a bull. There were thirteen colonies in early America and there were thirteen tribes in ancient Israel. During David's reign, Jerusalem became the capital of Israel and it was located in the center of the nation. Washington, D.C. was purposely situated in the center of the states, halfway between Massachusetts and Georgia. Jerusalem was built on a foundation of white Jerusalem limestone and the stones of its protective outer wall were originally white. Pierre L'Enfant, an engineer and the main designer of Washington, D.C. said, "I see white buildings glistening in the sun. I see wide avenues and tree-lined parks. In the exact center of the city, on Jenkins Heights, I see the Capitol. This will be the home of the Congress, the men who make the laws of our new nation." In ancient Israel at the Temple dedication, animals were offered as a sacrifice and eaten by the people while they rejoiced! When the cornerstone of the capitol was put down in 1793, citizens came to watch George Washington place it. After the ceremony, a 500-pound ox was killed, prepared, and served to the guests (Source: The Story of the Capital , Marilyn Prolman). As more federal buildings were erected, the area became known as the Washington Mall. The arrangement of the buildings is noteworthy. To the north was the White House, to the east was the Capitol, to the south was the Jefferson Memorial, and to the west was the Lincoln Memorial. Situated at the north of the wilderness camp was the camp of Dan, whose emblem was the eagle. To the north of the Washington Mall stands the White House.
