(1 Cor. 10:4). The first striking of the rock, early in the Exodus, is a picture of Him who was stricken for us (Exod. 17:5–6; see also Isa. 53:4). But this second event was meant to be a symbol of the victory of the Resurrection. In his anger, by striking the rock instead of speaking to it, Moses was saying that Christ’s sacrifice had not been enough; something more was needed. Moses exalted himself and Aaron in the eyes of the congregation by implying he and Aaron (“Must we … ,” Num. 20:10) were the ones providing the water instead of God. Spiritual unbelief had impacted all of Israel, as the entire generation who departed from Egypt died in the wilderness—except two men, Joshua and Caleb (Num. 14). Joshua was Moses’s minister, and he received the impartation and blessing of replacing Moses at his death and leading Israel into the Promised Land (Josh. 1:1–7). The NO of Moses became the YES of Joshua!
