of blood. His hands were filled with blood from being a warrior and a fighter. His worst moment was when he set up Uriah, the husband of Bathsheba, to be killed. Uriah was one of David’s faithful mighty men and was loyal to the king. David shed the innocent blood of his faithful soldier and thus forfeited the right of being the builder of the temple (1 Chron. 28:3). However , the NO o f David became the YES o f Solomon, David’s son. The name Solomon in Hebrew is Shelomoh and comes from the root word shalom , meaning “peace . ” Solomon was not a man of war but a king of peace, and his administration initiated peace in Israel for the first time in many generations. The Law of Moses taught that no iron tool should be used when building a stone altar (Deut. 27:5). Solomon followed this principle when precutting the stones at a rock quarry and bringing them to Jerusalem, so that no hammer, ax, or iron tool was heard (1 Kings 6:7). The metal of iron figuratively speaks of war and fighting, and the new temple was to be a house of peace and blessing. What David could not do, his son was enabled to do. The point is that God prevented David from doing what he wished in his heart to do—build God a house. However, the dream of David was passed on to his son, and David’s dream was eventually fulfilled. Moses was unable to enter the Promised Land for his one act of disobedience of striking the rock twice when the Almighty instructed him to simply “speak to the rock” (Num. 20:8–11).
