Who Closed the Heavens Over My Head?

And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron. The Lord shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed. —D EUTERONOMY 28:23–24, KJV

G OD’S BLESSINGS FLOW from heaven to earth like rain falling from the clouds. When the children of Israel walked in obedience, they received “rain in due season” (Lev. 26:4, KJV ). If their actions were contrary to God’s commandments and statutes, the Almighty would cause the heaven over their heads to “be brass,” a term indicating not one drop of water would fall from the sky. This punishment of dry heavens transpired in the days of Ahab, because the wicked king and his wife worshiped Baal and began slaying the true prophets (1 Kings 17:1). God closed the heavens over Israel, and a forty two-month drought struck the nation (2 Kings 18; Luke 4:25). For many years old-time ministers used the phrase “The heavens have turned to brass” figuratively when saying that
