The Greek word for the phrase “hold fast” is katecho, which is a compound of the two words kata and echo. The first word, kata, implies, “something that comes down hard, heavy and overpowering,” indicating that the force comes in with an overwhelming influence to subdue and conquer. The second word, echo , means, “I have,” and denotes possession. The word paints the imagery of a person searching a long time for something or someone, then when suddenly finding it, they seize hold of it without letting go.
