The King James Version of verse 6 reads, “ … Let him ask in faith, nothing wavering.” There are two different Greek words translated as “wavering.” One is found in Hebrews 10:23, where we are told to “hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering” ( KJV ), which means “without blending or mixing.” The word in James means ask in faith and do not withdraw from your belief and do not stagger or doubt. 2 Wavering would be if you said in the morning, “I believe God will do it,” and before the sun was setting, you are saying, “It just looks like nothing is going to happen!” For example, a father brought his epileptic son to Christ’s disciples, requesting them to expel the spirit from the lad. The disciples prayed, and nothing happened. Later Christ showed up, prayed, and the child was delivered. Christ told the dad that if he believed, all things were possible. The father replied, “I believe; help my unbelief” (Mark 9:17–24). This statement sounds like a contradiction: “I believe; help my unbelief.” A fountain cannot produce both bitter and sweet water, and a tree
