As John’s eyes continued to view the magnificent heavenly scene, he observed three phenomena occurring in connection with the throne of God.

And from the throne proceeded lightnings, thunderings, and voices. Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. —R EVELATION 4:5

Thunder, lightning, and rainbows are associated on earth with storms and rain. In John’s vision, the thunder and lightning indicated the coming upheavals and judgment to be initiated on earth shortly. The voice of God, however, was also identified with a sound like thunder when it was heard upon the earth (John 12:28–30). Lightning is one of nature’s most powerful and, at times, dangerous forces. In Psalm 144:5–6, lightning demonstrates this great power of God as it is released through a manifestation. The rainbow is the symbol of God’s covenant to man (Gen. 9:13). The voices heard coming out of the throne may be the voices of praise and worship that ascend up the ladder, arriving at the throne of God.
