T HE M ONTHS OF A V AND E LUL Prior to the Jewish New Year on the civil calendar, there are two important months for devout Jews—the months of Av and Elul . Occurring in the mid to latter summer, the month of Av precedes Elul , which is followed by the month of Tishri— the month the Jewish New Year begins. It is during the month of Elul , the final month of the Hebrew civil calendar, that a very important season is commemorated by devout Jewish people. In fact, this important spiritually set season is often linked with August as being a special month of answered prayer! W HAT I S T ESHUVAH ? There is a season called the forty days of Teshuvah . This season is historically connected to Moses and his encounter with God on Mount Sinai. After departing from Egypt and camping in the wilderness, Moses ascended Mount Sinai to receive the commandments from God. In Exodus 34:28, Moses spent forty days on the mountain. After descending into Israel’s camp, he saw the children of Israel worshiping the golden calf, and, in anger, Moses broke the commandment stones. Moses then returned to the top of the mountain for a second period of forty days during which he interceded on
