Holy Spirit” (Acts 1:5). Throughout the New Testament, when believers received the baptism or the infilling of the Holy Spirit, a special prayer language was imparted to the person, called, in the King James Version, “speaking with tongues” (Acts 2:4; 10:46; 19:6). The language is called the language of men and of angels (1 Cor. 13:1). The purpose of the prayer language is to enable a person’s inner spirit to speak to God (1 Cor. 14:2), to help the believer to build up his faith (Jude 20), and pray the will of God when he is uncertain of what His will is (Rom. 8:26– 28). I will not take the time to defend this teaching, as those who have received need no explanation, and those who have not can find the promise of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament. I will tell you that one of the most important things Dad taught me came from watching his own prayer life as he would change his words from English to praying in the prayer language of the Holy Spirit. If Dad was praying for more than an hour, at least half of his prayer would be in the language that the Holy Spirit had given him. He learned this by sitting under the ministry of Rufus. One of the daughters of Uncle Rufus attends a large Baptist church in Virginia. Years ago she told me that as a child, she would see her father step out of bed and fall to his knees in prayer. As the unction of the Lord came upon him, he would literally bounce on his knees all over the bedroom floor. At times, those downstairs wondered if the ceiling would eventually fall in!
