Some theologians suggest that the spiritual manifestations, including tongues, ceased when the New Testament was compiled. However, throughout history this manifestation has occurred and continued to reoccur during great spiritual awakenings and religious revivals, as revealed by these historical examples during the past one thousand years. In the twelfth century, Hildegard of Bingen (a.d. 1098– 1179) sang in other tongues, and the manifestation was called the concerts of the Spirit . 5 During the fourteenth century, the Moravians spoke in tongues, and the activity was called the “evacuations of the Spirit.” 6 In the seventeenth century there were French prophets who spoke in tongues and the interpretation was given by the same person. 7 It is reported that in the seventeenth century the early Quakers spoke as the Spirit gave utterance. 8 Later, in the 1800s the Catholic Apostolic Church under the leadership of Edward Irving began experiencing manifestations of tongue speaking and prophetic utterances. 9 The manifestation occurred in Murphy, North Carolina, in 1886 10 and was also manifest throughout the famous Azusa Street revival in Los Angeles at the turn of the twentieth century.
