times of great grief, it is common for a living loved one of the departed to cry out in an agonizing moment of grief or sorrow. At times there are no specific words said, as the sounds are not articulated words but painful groans, signaling loss, from deep within the soul. This is an example of “groanings which cannot be uttered.” The majority of our prayers are prayed with our understanding and in our native language. At times a Spirit-filled believer will begin to pray in the prayer language of the Spirit, often during worship (1 Cor. 14:15) or in times of deep intercession (Rom. 8:34). There will, however, be occasions when great heaviness or grief strikes the soul like an iron hammer hitting an anvil. Sudden and unexpected events overwhelm us and cause a weakness to the point of not knowing how to pray. In these seasons, often a sigh or a groaning from the soul is the only way a person can communicate to the heavenly Father. All three of these methods can be operative today, as the Holy Spirit is still on earth working through the body of Christ and enduing individual believers with power from on high.
