own, which He imparts to believers who are baptized in the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1–4; Acts 10:45–46; Acts 19:1–7). The Bible teaches that man consists of a body, a soul, and spirit (1 Thess. 5:23). When a believer prays “in the Spirit,” he or she is praying in the language the Lord has imparted to the individual’s inner spirit. In 1 Corinthians 14:14, we read: “For if I pray in a [ unknown ] tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful” (emphasis added). Just as the human body has a voice box with vocal cords, the human spirit has an inner voice of its own. The human body communicates in learned languages, but the human spirit can communicate in unlearned languages that are imparted by the Holy Spirit Himself. This form of communication involves your spirit speaking directly to God (1 Cor. 14:2). 3. Praying with groanings Paul taught that we make intercession with groanings that cannot be uttered. The Amplified says: “ … the Spirit Himself goes to meet our supplication and pleads in our behalf with unspeakable yearnings and groanings too deep for utterance” (Rom. 8:26). I understand the meaning of the prayer language called praying in the Spirit or speaking with tongues, but what does the word groaning mean? The word means, “to sigh or to cry out.” During
