T HE A UTHORITY OF THE N AME Being a student of Hebraic teaching, I am fully aware that the Hebrew name of Jesus is actually the name Yeshua . When the angel Gabriel came to Mary at Nazareth and said to her, “You shall call His name Jesus,” he actually said His name would be Yeshua . Some well-meaning believers argue and debate fellow Christians as to what name they are using in prayer. I have received letters and e-mails from people who teach that the English form of His name, Jesus , is a pagan form of the name Zeus and should not be used. In Christ’s day there were three languages spoken. The Jews spoke Hebrew, the Romans spoke Latin, and the Greeks spoke Greek. When Christ was crucified, an inscription was placed above His head in each of these three languages:
