The Greek name for Christ is Christos , which refers to Jesus being the “anointed one.” In the Old Testament three individuals could be anointed with the holy oil: 1. A king—1 Samuel 15:1; 16:12; 1 Kings 1:34 2. A prophet—Zechariah 4:14 3. A priest—Exodus 28:41; 30:30; Leviticus 16:32 Samuel was commissioned by the Lord to anoint Saul with holy oil (1 Sam. 9:16). Once Saul received the sacred oil, the Holy Spirit’s inspiration, like a mantle, was placed on this first king of Israel, and he was given “another heart” (1 Sam. 10:9). In another verse he was “turned into another man” and given the gift of prophecy (v. 6). Saul was not interested in being king, as he was “hidden among the equipment” (v. 22). The anointing of the Spirit will turn a shy person into a bold person and exchange a stony heart for a soft heart. When Saul failed God, Samuel was sent to the house of Jesse to anoint his youngest son, David. David was already noted as a warrior, having protected his father’s sheep by slaying a bear and a lion (1 Sam. 17:34–36). However, when Samuel poured an animal’s horn filled with oil over David’s head, the Spirit of the Lord immediately came upon him (1 Sam. 16:13). The Holy Spirit gifted David
