infants, Herod no doubt felt threatened by a possible future king of the Jews! Why does the adversary despise the sons? While there is no direct scripture to explain this hatred, there are observations that can be made. First, a son can carry on the family name, but a daughter will give up her name for her husband’s name. In the Old Testament, if a man passed away without children, his brother was to marry the widow to raise up children and carry on the departed brother’s name (Deut. 25:5–6). The sons were important in the aspect of procreation. God’s promises for the Hebrew nation were given to the “seed of Abraham.” The term seed is used in certain verses in reference to the unborn children who are promised to a man. This term seed is used for the fruit of a tree (Gen. 1:12), a natural seed that is planted in the ground (v. 11), and the seed that is in the loins of a man giving him the ability to create another living being (Gen. 13:16, KJV ). It is the man who carries the seed of promise that enables the woman to become impregnated with child. A third clue is given in Hebrews, when God speaks of the priestly ministry of the sons of Levi, the Levites (Heb. 7:5). The writer speaks of Abraham paying tithes (the tenth) to the first king and priest of Jerusalem, Melchizedek (Gen. 14).
