Praying Through the Battle of the Firstborn Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Consecrate to Me all the firstborn, whatever opens the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and beast; it is Mine.” —E XODUS 13:1–2
F ROM THE VERY outset of human time, there has been an unexplainable battle over the firstborn. Part of this conflict stems from the special genealogical birthright and spiritual blessing that marked the firstborn from the moment of their births. For some reason, the adversary has a great hatred toward the firstborn and often sets a target upon them from the moment of birth—especially firstborn sons. T HE L AW OF THE F IRST On the first day of Creation God separated the light from the darkness (Gen. 1:4–5). The “law of the first” is a law of “separation.” The firstborn of the animals were to be separated from the flock and set aside for God (Exod. 13:2). The firstfruits
