18. JEWELRY
Many Christians, I believe, are aware of some occultic jewelry such as a ring with a pentagram on it. However, there is far more to jewelry than just some occultic symbol engraved on it. A witch, Scott Cunningham, explains: “Jewelry’s origins lie in magic. That should come as no surprise to us, for as I’ve said, nearly all human customs and the technologies which result from those customs stem from ancient magical practices and beliefs. “In earliest times, jewelry was probably worn to avert negativity, then envisioned as ‘evil spirits.’ Jewelry was also often placed in tombs with other grave goods to guard the dead. “As perception of the energies within objects sharpened, certain stones and metals were associated with various organs and regions of the body and were worn to guard the health. Later, stones, metals, horn, feathers, bone and many other materials were donned for their power to attract love, health, money and other necessities of life.... “When materialism has ruled over naturalism, jewelry has survived purely as ornamentation or, at times, as a statement of class definition. Yes, jewelry still has a few ceremonial roles, such as engagement and wedding bands, but even these have lost their original magical messages.... “Until the nineteenth century in much of the Western world, the history of jewelry was a history of magic....” Laurie Cabot, another witch, comments: “Many Witches wear crystals as jewelry, along with other gemstones that have magical powers. Jewelry is a way to have magic on your body without anyone knowing it but you and others who are wise in the ways of the Craft. In general, Witch jewelry is worn because it directs energies to various parts of the body.”
