NIV chief Edwin Palmer asserts that the terms 'one' and 'only' are "modem and elegant" substitutions .33 But historians have regarded the title as 'old and evil'. Layard's Babylon and Nineveh (London, 1853) traces the origin of the 'One Only' to the serpent "the one Only God of the Babylonians. "34 MACROBIUS, Saternalia written in A.D.1521 confirms the historical association of the term "one only" with Satan.

The title, according to "Asiatic Researches" (London, 1806) was a "wicked perversion of the title of the true God." Lowth and other Orientalists have written of the perverse "rites of the ONLY ONE. "36 Another author notes the universal adoption of the title by pagan religions worldwide and its depiction by the symbol of the dragon or serpent.
