two habits. This cost could double or triple in other parts of the country with higher cigarette taxes. Think how much money a person could save each week by giving up these two habits. Occasionally in a service, I ask people how much they used to spend each weekend to have what they considered a “good time” sinning. The average amount seemed to be about $250 a weekend. This means that the average person could spend as much as a thousand dollars a month on sin, habits or addictions. What could the average person do with an additional thousand dollars a month? One man, a former drug addict, told me that he spent thousands of dollars every week when he was an addict! The various forms of bondages and sins that lock you into a spiritual prison are actually the enemies of God. Through His powerful redemptive covenant, He can release you from those chains of captivity and free you. The weapons that were defeating you are now themselves defeated, and you can enter the future armed with knowledge, wisdom and redemption. 8. G OD C AN T RANSFER THE W EALTH OF THE S INNER One of the most unusual stories that received national exposure and much controversy years ago was when a noted minister was attempting to raise a significant amount of money for a specific project. He was short of funds before the deadline, and an elderly man who owned a dog race track saw him on television and sent a $1.3 million donation so that he would stop asking for money. This check was large enough to provide all the funds the ministry needed. This money came from an unusual source. The donation caused a controversy among some Christians who could not believe that a minister would take gambling money from a dog track owner. Others just smiled and said, “Well, the Bible says that the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just” (Prov. 13:22). I have pondered this incident and have a few comments to make concerning money in general. Money is amoral, meaning that it is neither good nor bad. We all know that money is necessary to pay for housing, transportation, food, utilities, medical expenses, education and so on. It is also a fact that some of the older hundred dollar bills have traces of cocaine on them. However, are you going to throw away your Benjamin Franklins because of that? The Bible says that the love of money is the root of all evil (1 Tim. 6:10); but
