As the government financial records in Samaria were being checked, they noticed the loan had never been paid back, as Obediah had died before repaying it. Creditors came to collect and the widow of Obediah cried out for supernatural intervention (2 Kings 4:1). Josephus wrote: For they say that the widow of Obediah, Ahab’s steward, came to him and said he was not ignorant how her husband had preserved the prophets that were to be slain by Jezebel... he borrowed money for their maintenance and after her husband’s death she and her children were carried away to be made slaves by creditors.... J OSEPHUS B OOK IX, C HAPTER IV Elisha, being a servant of Elijah, knew how Obediah had fed the prophets, so he now sought God on behalf of his widow. Obediah’s obedience did more than spare the prophets in times of famine; he also built a spiritual memorial in heaven (Acts 10:1-4), enabling his wife to tap into a special favor and blessing, even when the man had passed away. God remembered her for her husband’s faithfulness. When I felt the call into the ministry as a sixteen year old minister’s son, I was good friends with an older minister who was also a writer and a book printer. At age eighteen my personal desire was to write a small 32-page book, but what subject can an eighteen-year-old write about? I had few life experiences and limited Biblical knowledge. However, I did understand and believe in the Biblical promises of God for believers. By faith I wrote a manuscript called “Precious Promises for Believers.” The next challenge was to find the money to print five hundred books.
