hand, Ezekiel saw a whirlwind coming from the north, with the appearance of a fire descending. Within it the prophet saw the throne of God being carried on the shoulders of four cherubim. On several occasions Daniel saw Gabriel and numerous other strange symbolism as he witnessed beasts rising up, representing empires. There are four different types of words found in Daniel to describe the different methods by which a vision can be received. 1. The word chazown This word refers to a mental sight, dream, revelation, or oracle . It is found in Daniel 1:17, where it states that Daniel had “understanding in all visions and dreams.” It can also be found in Daniel 8:1–2, 13, 15, 26, and in other references. 2. The word chezev This Aramaic word simply means sight or vision . This word is used in Daniel 2:19, when Daniel received a secret from the Lord in a night vision and was later brought before the king and interpreted the famous dream of the metallic image. This form of a vision occurs while a person is asleep. 3. The word mar’ah This word, found in Daniel 10:7–8, is also translated as “vision,” and is used to describe seeing a reflection in a mirror.
