commissioned them to teach and pray for the needs of the sick in every community (Luke 10:1). There has been speculation as to the purpose of having two disciples on each team. The writer in Ecclesiastes gave insight when he wrote:

Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

There is a certain level of strength that multiplies when one person joins with another. Spiritual authority is increased when two join together in agreement. Christ said:

Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them. —M ATTHEW 18:18–20
