When they protested about His conduct, “Jesus answered, ‘Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. But if one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.’” John 11:9, 10 (NKJV). The formulae for both guaranteed success and certain failure are given in this instruction. If we sincerely desire success and wish to escape failure, we should heed these teachings from Him who, together with His Father, is the highest authority in the universe. But what does it mean to walk in the day? Various people would give different answers. A clear explanation is found in the book The Desire of Ages 527.1: “‘If any man walk in the day,’ He continued, ‘he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.’ He who does the will of God, who walks in the path that God has marked out, cannot stumble and fall. The light of God’s guiding Spirit gives him a clear perception of his duty, and leads him aright till the close of his work. ‘But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.’ He who walks in a path of his own choos ing, where God has not called him, will stumble. For him day is turned into night, and wherever he may be, he is not secure.” This explanation defines what God’s will is by adding the words, “... who walks in the path that God has marked out”, as distinct from walking “... in a path of his own choosing”. In other

If we walk in a path of our own choosing

If we walk in the path that God has marked out

we will surely stumble

we cannot stumble and fall
